..another reason..
I picked my father up from the Nashville International Airport on a
rather cold Saturday morning last April. He was on his way home
from Brasil, his plane flying in from Atlanta. It did not take very long
to find the Continental/Delta baggage claim; this section of the
terminal was surprisingly empty, a large portion of its occupants
sharing my destiny.
After waiting only a few minutes, several people started making their
way down the escalator to baggage claim. They were all soldiers, in
uniform, except for my father and a couple of other passengers. The
soldiers were all in from Iraq.
Laughing friends and weeping family members greeted the soldiers.
It was tempting to observe, to listen. A woman and her husband
embraced; she wept. Three young girls hugged their mother for the
first time in over two years. A woman filmed as a toddler saw his
father, as it turns out, for the first time in his short life. Another
soldier later revealed to me that these troops were only to be home
to visit for two weeks before going back to Iraq.
Two weeks…
There are many legitimate reasons to despise this war; here is another.
